Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the nature of liquid films, exploring the causes that influence their formation and persistence. The author, a renowned physicist, presents a comprehensive analysis of experimental and theoretical findings on the subject. The book examines the crucial role of surface viscosity in the stability of liquid films, challenging the traditional understanding of viscosity as the primary factor governing film behavior. The author introduces a novel concept of surface viscosity, distinct from the viscosity of the bulk liquid, and demonstrates its profound impact on film properties. Through meticulous experiments and theoretical deductions, the author classifies liquids into three categories based on their film-forming characteristics. This classification highlights the diverse behaviors of liquids when subjected to forces that stretch them into thin films. The author skillfully interweaves experimental data with theoretical insights, providing a comprehensive understanding of the underlying mechanisms that govern film stability. This book breaks new ground in the study of liquid films, offering a fresh perspective on the interplay between surface forces and film dynamics. It is an indispensable resource for researchers and students working in the fields of fluid mechanics, soft matter physics, and materials science, and offers valuable insights into the fundamental properties of liquids. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. His early work was on the field of physiological optics. The basis of much of this work was his observation that an image takes an appreciable time to form on, and to disappear from, the retina. He also studied various optical illusions that result from the persistence of the image on the retina. PLATEAU studied in great detail the phenomena of accidental colors and irradiation, both of which he considered as arising from a similar cause related to the persistence of the image on the retina.". He was a successful teacher and was also active in organizing the physics laboratory at the university. Plateau's work on molecular forces was published in a series of memoirs between 1843 and 1868 and again, with some revision, as a book in 1873. In this work he rationalized the arrangement, made corrections, and carried his historical account up to the year 1869. He has introduced new material on the superficial viscosity of liquids, and on the constitution of liquid veins, and made several smaller additions. At the end of volume 2 is a listing of articles which appeared after 1869. Plateau was concerned with the equilibrium of masses of liquid and with the properties of layers of liquids, and of columns of unstable liquids. his exhaustive analysis is illustrated with the results of experiments and with historical accounts of the development of related concepts. During his blindness, Plateau was aided in his work by his son-in-law G. Van der Mensbrugghe". (DSB & Bibliotheca Mechanica p. 256)**7077/M3.…

Hardcover. Zustand: g+. First edition in book form. Quarto. [4], 450, [2], 495, [1]pp. Original full cloth with gold lettering and ruling on spines. In 1873, Belgian physicist Joseph Plateau published this two-volume work summarizing his decades of research into soap bubbles and related phenomena due to surface tension. Entitled "Statique Expérimentale et Théorique des Liquides Soumis aux Seules Forces Moléculaires," it has become an inspiration for generations of mathematicians and phycists. The two parts in fact collect all of Plateau's work on experiments about surface tension in liquids, published between 1842 and 1868 in the form of 11 "mémoires". Though less known to the larger public, this research is in fact a lot more important than any of Plateau's perception experiments. In this work, Plateau wonders which are the forces that generate the spherical form. Since no gravity acts on the sphere, molecular forces dominate the process. Plateau proves experimentally that these act in a very thin surface layer. He knows (from Laplace's theory) that a liquid, standing on itself, exerts a force on each point of the surface equal to a constant (which depends on the liquid) multiplied by the mean curvature of the surface in that point. A number of equilibrium surfaces can thus arise. In the first place the sphere, as in Plateau's experiment, but also the cylinder and the flat plane. Plateau finds three other surfaces of revolution that follow these laws: the onduloid, the nodoid and the catenoid (names given by Plateau). This work contains numerous charts and 105 in-text figs. Moderate sunning on spines and along edges. Head and tail of spines slightly chipped. Minor age-toning along paper margin. Text in French. Binding in overall good- to good, interior in good+ to very good condition.…
