Grâce à la reproduction en couleurs de toutes les oeuvres exposées, ce livre invite le lecteur à une promenade conduisant de Tiepolo à Degas, en passant par Bocion, Magritte, Vallotton, Vuillard ou encore Valadon. Le parcours s'ouvre avec de très beaux dessins des Tiepolo, artistes majeurs du XVIIIe siècle vénitien, pour se poursuivre avec François Bocion, dont la publication reproduit une riche sélection de tableaux, des vues vénitiennes aux parties de plaisir sur le lac Léman. Réuni autour du somptueux pastel de Degas, les Danseuses, reçu en legs en 1998 par la Fondation de l'Hermitage, un ensemble d oeuvres de cet artiste sur le thème de la danse permet de comprendre toute la modernité de ces compositions novatrices. L'impressionnisme occupe une place privilégiée au coeur du catalogue, avec la présence de peintres chers à la Fondation de l'Hermitage, tels Sisley, Fantin-Latour ou encore Caillebotte. Vuillard et Vallotton sont également présentés dans une section qui leur est entièrement dévolue. La présence d'artistes vaudois des premières décennies du XXe siècle permet quant à elle de saisir les nouvelles tendances de l'art en Suisse à cette période charnière. Le surréalisme, avec notamment plusieurs chefs-d oeuvre de Magritte, est aussi mis à l'honneur. Le catalogue se clôt sur un remarquable corpus de tableaux de Suzanne Valadon, dont les couleurs vibrantes sont merveilleusement articulées dans des compositions simples et fortes. She considers the function of each of them in the narrative development of the Roman Antiquities to show how Dionysius portrayed legendary Roman characters for an empire-wide, Greek-speaking audience, and how such portraits served his historiographical and pedagogical aims. The literary work of Dionysius represents a milestone in the contemporary discourse about Greek and Roman identities. Dionysius composed a history of Rome from the aftermath of the Trojan War to the outbreak of the First Punic War, aiming to reconcile Greek intellectual opposition to Rome with Roman domination by demonstrating that the Romans were originally Greek and lived by Greek moral principles. He also intended his history as 'exemplary' by offering his readers models of good leadership through his characters. The author contextualizes Dionysius' effort within the cultural and political climate of Augustan Rome to illustrate the extent of contemporary influences on Dionysius' project.…
