Les rapports d'autopsie, conservés, laissent apparaître aujourd'hui que l'orateur, qui abusait de tous les excitants, souffr…ait de coliques néphrétiques depuis au moins deux ans, et qu'il mourut d'une péricardite : la thèse de l'empoisonnement fut ainsi définitivement écartée."La violence de la maladie, ses progrès rapides, la promptitude de la mort, peut être aussi les craintes exagérées que, la célébrité de M. Riquetti, les services qu'il a rendus à la chose publique, et le malheur des circonstances, semblent justifier jusqu'à un certain point, ont fait soupçonner que la mort de M. Riquetti pourroit n'être pas naturelle. Pour vérifier le fait, ou pour détruire des soupçons, peut-être mal fondés, il est nécessaire de procéder à l'ouverture et à la visite du cadavre, et de mettre toute la publicité et toute l'authenticité possible dans cette visite".Étienne de Poleverel (1738-1795) se fera plus complètement connaître sous la Convention comme l'adjoint de Sonthonax à Saint-Domingue.
