Very rare blue-backed chart of the world. Modern lining. Earlier tears repaired, with very minimal loss at neat line border. Uncolored. First edition. Very rare. OCLC and a Google search show only one copy of the 1862 second edition. No copies of this first edition appear. The chart wraps around such that the whole Atlantic Ocean is at both the right and left sides. Very good detail in Canada above Hudson Bay, reflecting efforts to identify a Northwest Passage. There are also a couple of points of land shown in Antarctica due south of Cape Horn. The map was compiled and drawn by H. F. Freemont and engraved by J. W. Lowry.…
