Edition originale de la thèse de l'auteur présidée par Orfila. Jean-Ythier Poumet (1804-1888) originaire d'Orléans, était interne des… hôpitaux de Paris et membre de la Société anatomique. En 1844, il se présenta au concours d'agrégation de médecine (sciences accessoires) mais échoua à ce concours, tout comme Sappey et Claude Bernard (!), les candidats reçus étant Béclard, Duméril et Favre. Les recherches et expérimentations sur l'empoisonnement par les cantharides occupent les pages 5-76 de cette thèse, les pages suivantes étant consacrées aux habituelles "Questions sur diverses branches des sciences médicales". On y distingue 2 parties : généralités (dont les méthodes utilisées) ; expérimentations. Poumet démontre que la présence des mouches cantharides administrées à l'intérieur, (soit entières, soit en poudre très fine) peut être mise en évidence dans les matières des vomissements, dans les matières fécales et dans le tube digestif, et cela jusqu'à 210 jours après l'inhumation. Et il expose le moyen de pratiquer cette recherche. BELLE PROVENANCE : Pierre Charles Alexandre Louis (1787-1872), destinataire de l'envoi, qui exerça dans les hôpitaux de Paris, fut un pionnier de la médecine factuelle, de l'épidémiologie clinique et de ce qui deviendra l'Evidence Based Medicine (Cf. Morabia A : PCA Louis and the birth of clinical epidemiology, J Clin Epidemiol 1997, 49, 1327-1333; Best M & Neuhauser D: Pierre Charles Alexandre Louis : Master of the spirit of mathematical clinical science, Qual.
