Los temas que trata desentonan con la literatura sobre los jardines de la época. De ahí, quizás, el impacto limitado del libro. Impreso en una única edición de dos mil ejemplares por cuenta del autor, al publicarse no apareció ni una sola reseña en la prensa especializada. Pero aquellos dos mil ejemplares siguen circulando. Es posible toparse con uno de ellos, manchado de tierra, en un mercadillo de segunda mano, en una pequeña biblioteca de provincias o en el salón de uno de los fieles adeptos de Jorn de Précy diseminados por el mundo. Greystone fue su obra maestra. Según el decir de sus contemporáneos, el lugar era inquietante y maravilloso. Claude Monet, que lo visitó en 1906, escribe: «El jardín del señor De Précy ofrece cuadros de un encanto intenso e indefinible que llega directo al corazón. Lo salvaje se mezcla constantemente con lo artificial, el sueño con la realidad». El título del ensayo alude tanto a la marginación del jardín en el mundo moderno como a la inquietud de su autor respecto a su futuro incierto. Desgraciadamente, los temores de Jorn de Précy resultaron fundados y, tras la muerte de Samuel, su jardinero y único heredero, el jardín cayó en el abandono y pronto se convirtió en una selva.
