Hardcover. Zustand: Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Fair. First Edition. Signed and inscribed by Translator and Editor Seymour B. Liebman [1907-1986] atop half-title. "Poetic beauty and religious fervor flow from the memoirs and letters of this young Jew of Mexico City who was burned at the stake on December 8, 1596, accused of secretly practicing forbidden Jewish rites. These documents and his spiritual Last Will and Testament are starkly moving witnesses to a dark period in the social history of that part of New Spain that is now Mexico." - dust jacket. "The only known extant writings by a Jew in Mexico during the Spanish colonial period, 1521-1821, are the memoirs, letters, and will written during 1595 and 1596 by Luis de Carvajal, el Mozo (the Younger)." - Foreword. "Professor Liebman has not only carefully translated these valuable documents, but has also provided them with detailed notes, a fine introduction, and an epilogue. In these well-documented pages, he has been able to bring back to life the record of an extraordinary personality and his family - I believe that not only scholars interested in American and Jewish history but also many general readers will find much thought-provoking material in this collection." - Salo W. Baron. "Utterly unique." - Cecil Roth. pp.[8]-157. Selected bibliography. Index. Fifteen illustrations. Two genealogical tables. Book virtually as new. Clean, bright and unmarked with negligible wear to publisher's coarse beige cloth. Tight and square.
