The revolutions in the erstwhile Soviet states and the Arab Spring reflected popular demands for democracy and the removal of long-standing authoritarian, ineffective, or externally aligned regimes. The War on Terror in Afghanistan and Iraq are rooted in historical contexts-Afghanistan's experience in the Cold War era and the long-standing adversarial relationship between the United States and Iraq.
