El electrodo sensible al pH suele ser de vidrio, y el de referencia suele ser un electrodo de cloruro de plata-plata, aunque a veces se utiliza un electrodo de cloruro mercurioso de mercurio (calomel). Cuando los dos electrodos se sumergen en una solución, actúan como una batería. El electrodo de vidrio desarrolla un potencial eléctrico (carga) que está directamente relacionado con la actividad de los iones de hidrógeno en la solución (59,2 milivoltios por unidad de pH a 25 °C [77 °F]), y el voltímetro mide la diferencia de potencial entre los electrodos de vidrio y de referencia.
