3pp, 16mo. On bifolium of laid paper, with armorial watermark. Forty-two lines of text, signed Downshire and addressed To / The Princess Charlotte of Wales . The first five lines are scored through, as is another passage on the first page. The deleted commencement reads: Madam. / I hasten to return Yr. R. H. my humble thanks for the kind & gracious reply to my letter which [?] or receiving, in which Yr. R. H. confers upon Lady D. & myself in a manner so peculiarly [?] honour we have most anxiously desired. The honour in question is consenting to be godmother to our little girl who shall be always brought up in every sentiment of respect & affection for her Royal Protector, whose name she will have the Honour of bearing. The second half of the letter continues in much the same vein. The daughter, Lady Charlotte Augusta Hill (1815-1861), married Sir George Chetwynd.

The front page announces: 'Her Royal Highness the Princess Charlotte Augusta, daughter of His Royal Highness the Prince Regent, and Consort of His Serene Highness the Prince Leopold of Saxe-Cobourg, was delivered of a still-born male child, at nine o'clock last night, and about half-past twelve Her Royal Highness was seized with great difficulty of breathing, restlessness, and exhaustion, which alarming symptoms increased till half-past two this morning, when Her Royal Highness expired, to the inexpressible grief of His Royal Highness, the Prince Regent, of her illustrious Consort the Prince Leopold, and of all the Royal Family.' Page 2269 onwards is number 17303 of the London Gazette published on November 8th, and recording the orders of the court for going into mourning.
