Formó parte del llamado Grupo de Bloomsbury por su relación sentimental con el pintor Duncan Grant, con quien trabajaría en una granja como objetor de conciencia (ambos eran pacifistas) durante la Primera Guerra Mundial. Posteriormente regentó una librería en el Soho londinense. En 1922, con La dama que se transformó en zorro (Periférica, 2014), alcanzó una gran popularidad y obtuvo los premios James Tait Black Memorial y Hawthornden.
