A leaflet measuring 4-5/8" by 7-3/4" and containing eight pages including front and rear covers. Published out of No. 304 Arch Street, the tract begins: "The communion of the body and blood of Christ is a mystery hid from men in the first or fallen and degenerate state, which they cannot understand nor comprehend, as they there abide, neither can they be participators of it, nor yet are they able to discern the Lord's body. Hence the outward supper was not instituted as an ordinance by our Lord, who was and is himself the bread and water of life." Condition: it appears that a rectangular object once rested on the tract, and the front cover shows light narrow age-marks from its perimeter; otherwise and overall the tract is in excellent condition.…

SAMUEL BUTLER: Two of his most famous pieces are the Utopian satire Erewhon and this posthumous novel The Way of All Flesh. The Way of All Flesh (1903) is a semi-autobiographical novel by Samuel Butler which attacks Victorian-era hypocrisy. Written between 1873 and 1884, it traces four generations of the Pontifex family. It represents a relaxation from the religious outlook from a Calvinistic approach, which is presented as harsh. Butler dared not publish it during his lifetime, but when it was published it was accepted as part of the general revulsion against Victorianism. NICE CLEAN COPY.…

In den WarenkorbZustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. Description A finely engraved and hand-coloured genealogical chart of the Kings of England, published in London on 1st February 1817, and entered at Stationers' Hall. This large-format visual genealogy presents the full royal succession from the Norman Conquest through to the early nineteenth century, laid out in an intricate and highly structured format. Monarchs are clearly identified in red, with branching lineage carefully traced across generations, offering both historical clarity and decorative appeal. The chart was published for the author by R. Bickerstaff (Essex Street, Strand) and distributed through a network of prominent London print and bookselling houses including Ackermann, Colnaghi, and Boydell, with engraving executed by W. J. White of Holborn—placing it firmly within the commercial and artistic print culture of Regency London. Printed on a single large sheet, the work combines typographic precision with engraved ornament, including decorative cartouches and explanatory panels. The upper and lower margins retain the original printed panels, including publication details and interpretative notes regarding succession and interregnum periods. Condition Good. The sheet remains structurally sound and visually strong, with clear, legible impressions throughout. Light age toning consistent with early 19th-century paper Minor surface marks and handling wear Edges appear clean and well-preserved Colour elements remain fresh and stable Overall, a well-preserved example suitable for display. Notes; Dated 1817 Entered at Stationers' Hall Distributed by leading London printsellers of the period Engraved genealogical chart with hand-colouring Regency-era historical print production Why This Matters; Genealogical charts of this scale and clarity were both educational tools and decorative objects, intended for display as much as reference. Examples tied to the Ackermann / Strand print network represent a distinct moment in British print history—where commercial engraving, historical narrative, and visual design intersect. Surviving examples in good condition are increasingly scarce, particularly with strong colour and full margins intact. Price £950.…

Chipman's landmark work occupies a pivotal place in American jurisprudence, capturing a moment of profound transformation in economic and legal thought. In his 1847 Legal Bibliography, J.G. Marvin famously criticized Chipman, asserting that the author "show[ed] what the law of contracts ought to be rather than what the law of contracts is." However, modern legal historians view Marvin's critique as a failure to grasp a rapidly evolving legal landscape, demonstrating instead that Chipman's ideas were profoundly ahead of their time. As legal historian Morton Horwitz points out, Chipman was the first American jurist to dismantle the traditional, paternalistic "equity theory of contract"-which focused on the inherent fairness of an exchange-and submerge it in a modern "conception of contractual obligation based exclusively on express bargains" determined strictly by market values. Consequently, this essay remains an indispensable primary source for understanding the development of early American commercial law and the unique marketplace practices of the young republic. Daniel Chipman was a distinguished Vermont attorney, a professor of law at Middlebury College, and a vital political figure in the state's formative years. He served as a representative to both the Vermont state legislature and the U.S. Congress, and was a prominent delegate to several Vermont constitutional conventions. Marvin, Legal Bibliography 189.
