Comme la plupart des femmes manquent d'actifs qui contribuent au bien-être et à l'autonomisation des femmes en Inde, la liberté économique par le biais du développement de l'esprit d'entreprise et de l'auto-emploi est une question qui mérite une attention particulière. Le gouvernement indien leur a donc fourni des groupes d'entraide pour femmes (SHG). Un groupe d'entraide pour les femmes est une petite association bénévole de personnes en difficulté, issues pour la plupart du même milieu socio-économique. Un petit crédit leur est accordé pour les rendre entreprenants ; il peut s'agir d'un groupe composé uniquement d'hommes, de femmes ou même d'une variété de groupes. Bien que, d'après l'expérience, les groupes de femmes obtiennent généralement de bons résultats dans toutes les activités importantes des SHG.
