On y apprend surtout beaucoup sur la vie à bord d'un long ou moyen-courrier et les responsabilités du chef de bord. L'auteur dit simplement ce qu'il a vu, ce qu'il a senti, et entraîne avec exaltation le lecteur à sa suite.
