Hardcover. Zustand: Very good. Special Edition for CR Subscribers Only. 444p octavo, foxing on the end papers, plus a very light stain on the inside of the rear panel. Otherwise a very good copy in black cloth. Matthews was an American political activist a committed pacifist and according to William F Buckley the first to coin the term "Fellow Traveller". He was a communist and wrote this book with Shallcross who was the publisher and his wife. Grosset & Dunlap also printed it the same year but this was by subscription from her company 'Consumer Research'. The book is inscribed by Matthews to "Buck and Alice" who was Howard "Buck" Kester and his wife Alice. Howard Kester was an American preacher, organizer and activist based in the south noted for organizing the Southern Tenant Farmers Union in 1934. Matthews in his inscription to Kester notes "(see page 401)" On page 401 he recounts the brutal hanging and dismemberment of Claud Neal who was arrested in the murder of Lola Cannady in Marianna Florida in 1934. Kester represented the NAACP in investigating that murder.
