Hardcover. Zustand: Good. 1st Edition. Published in 1919, this is the scarce first edition of this important study into Trench Fever published immediately after the First World War. This is a Unique Association Copy: and includes an original typed and signed letter by Major William Byam (W. Byam), the primary author of the book. Byam was a major in the Royal Army Medical Corps (R.A.M.C.) who led the British War Office Committee on Trench Fever. The letter is addressed directly to co-author Captain J. H. Churchill written from New End Military Hospital, dated 30th June 1919. New End Military Hospital, Hampstead, N.W.3. was a vital location in medical history. Originally a workhouse infirmary, it was requisitioned during WWI as a military hospital specifically dedicated to researching trench fever and heart conditions affecting soldiers Byam explicitly mentions distributing this "Trench Fever book" via Oxford Press and details transitioning Churchill's medical responsibilities (specifically his "blood counting method") to a successor. The letter reads "Herewith four copies of the Trench Fever book; should you require more I will try and get them out of the Oxford Press for you, but cannot promise to succeed." "I am glad to say I have at last got a successor to take on your job -- quite a keen man named Coles. I have told him about your blood counting method and said that when he found his feet, I would ask you whether you could spare time some day to come and give him a demonstration. I should think in about a week's time he should have learnt sufficient about trench fever to make a start." The book features the official bookplate of the Wellcome Unit for the History of Medicine Library, University of Oxford, cleanly stamped "Withdrawn," confirming its legal deaccession and direct link back to Oxford's historic collections. Ram (Haarlem, 19 december 1884 - Amersfoort, 7 oktober 1961) was een Nederlands leraar, astroloog, schrijver en journalist. Rams astrologische carrière ging van start toen hij voor het door A.E. Thierens opgerichte tijdschrift Urania begon te schrijven. Hij was ook degene die het door Thierens gelanceerde Nederlandsch Astrologisch Genootschap leidde dat in oktober 1947, na de Tweede Wereldoorlog, onder de naam Stichting Werkgemeenschap van Astrologen (WvA) werd voortgezet. De WvA wordt ook wel de "School van Ram" genoemd. Ook de bekende astroloog Leo Knegt werkte hieraan mee. De drie genoemde initiators werden bij de opzet van de nieuwe astrologische school geïnspireerd door de theosofie. De doelstelling van de WvA is drieledig: 1) Studie en onderzoek van de astrologie; 2) Verdieping van inzicht in de achtergronden en hulpwetenschappen van de astrologie; 3) Onderwijs in de astrologie, haar achtergronden en haar hulpwetenschappen. Vooral Rams werk "Psychologische Astrologie" geldt als zeer invloedrijk voor de Nederlandse astrologie. Van Theo Ram werd gezegd dat hij de positie van iemands Maan in de geboortehoroscoop (het teken en het huis) precies kon voorspellen door die persoon gewoon te observeren. De School van Ram, die zich bezighoudt met psychologische astrologie, bracht enkele astrologische vernieuwingen. Zowel de opzet van de horoscoopfiguur als de duiding ervan wijken af van de traditionele werkwijze binnen de westerse astrologie. Ongetwijfeld de bekendste vernieuwing waren de hypothetische planeten Persephone, Hermes en Demeter, die bij de analyse van de horoscoop betrokken werden.…
