Il genere letterario dell'antologia ha subito modificazioni profonde nel corso della storia: genere contaminato per eccellenza, fin dalla tarda antichità l'anthologia costituisce una questione critica tuttora aperta.Nel mondo classico è notevole il divario tra la raccolta di versi di provenienza alessandrina e la prima vera antologia della letteratura latina, concepita nel VI secolo d.C. per "salvare" più testi possibili, senza rigide barriere letterarie.Più avanti nel tempo si assiste a nuove declinazioni del genere: i "templi" dedicati alle grandi dame del Rinascimento, in cui convivono liriche delle più diverse tradizioni linguistiche; le sillogi di "rimatrici" mosse da rivendicazioni del genio femminile; i testi che piegano la poesia mediolatina alla satira contro le istituzioni ecclesiastiche, come i Varia poemata di Mattia Flacio Illirico; le singolari "antologie per immagini" che animano un vivace mercato europeo delle stampe tra Riforma e Controriforma.Sul finire dell'Ottocento, con l'Anthologia latina di Buecheler-Riese torna il tentativo di sottrarre all'oblio quanti più autori e testi; ma sarà l'inquieto Novecento, con le sue avanguardie e con le sue aspre polemiche, a registrare una catena di antologie e di auto-antologie, che disporranno ulteriormente il canone a usi e trasformazioni molteplici.Bianca Maria Da Rif, docente di Letteratura italiana all'Università di Padova, è attualmente direttore del Centro Studi Dino Buzzati.Silvio Ramat insegna Letteratura italiana contemporanea all'Università di Padova.
