Den Verlag kennen wir: die Noyes Data Corporation bezog ihr Wissen direkt aus den amtlichen Veröffentlichungen des US-Patentamtes (dem USPTO - United States Patent and Trademark Office). Unser vorliegendes Buch lieferte eine systematische Zusammenstellung von US-Patenten der 1970er Jahre, die sich mit der Gewinnung und Verarbeitung von Ölschiefer (Oil Shale) und Teersänden (Tar Sands) befassen. Es sammelte die Patente für hochkomplexe chemische und thermische Verfahren (wie die In-situ-Retortierung, Lösungsmittelextraktion und Hydrierung), um das zähe Kerogen und Bitumen aus dem Gestein zu brechen und in flüssiges Rohöl zu verwandeln. Wie in anderen Fällen war auch hier die Nachftage sicher: Ranneys Durchsuchungsergebnis war transatlantisch begehrt. In den USA und in Kanada hatte man sich nach den Ölkrisen von 1973 und 1979 an die eigenen Ölschiefer- und Teersände-Vorkommen erinnert. Und in Frankfurt war man elektrisiert: die Tochter Lurgi besaß zusammen mit der Ruhrgas AG ein weltweit gefragtes, patentiertes Verfahren zur thermischen Veredelung von feinkörnigen Kohlen und eben Ölschiefer (das sogenannte Lurgi-Ruhrgas-Verfahren / LR-Prozess). Lurgi baute längst weltweit Großanlagen - unter anderem die berühmte Ölschiefer-Anlage in Estland (Raffinerie Narva) und Projekte in den USA (Colorado). Um diese marktbeherrschende Stellung zu nutzen, war für die Frankfurter Ingenieure das zeitnahe Wissen unverzichtbar, was die amerikanische Konkurrenz im Patentamt angemeldet hatte. The covers have No soiling but have very slight sun fading at the front top edge and a narrow strip at the spine's bottom edge that has sun faded to tan from blue. The interior pages appear flawless. No sun yellowing. No markings or writing. No creases or tears. The DJ is Very Good- due to two tears, one at the top front edge(1 1/2 inches) and one at the rear bottom edge(3/4's of an inch). There is also a light crease above 'Prairie Passage' on the the front. The Dj is quite clean and once it is placed in a protective cover it should present fairly well but the front cover tear will likely still be visible. Also, as you can see from some of the scanned photos this 9 by 12 inch book is large, larger than the scanner surface. I tried to provide pictures with the imperfections noted above.
