John Lawrence Sullivan (1858-1918), known as the "Boston Strong Boy", was recognized as the first heavyweight champion of gloved boxing in the latter part of the 19th century. He is generally considered to be the last heavyweight bare-knuckle champion under the London Prize Ring rules. The first American sports hero to become a national celebrity, he was also the first American athlete to earn over 1 million dollars.
