The subject was inspired by the abundance of artistic talent that has existed in Lane Cove in the 20th century. The order of artists relates to the date which they arrived in Lane Cove (a northern Sydney suburb). The author states that it is a historical record of the artists' lives and what they have contributed, and their relationship with Lane Cove.
