Johan Rudolf Thorbecke is de geschiedenis in gegaan als auteur van de grondwet van 1848 en als de architect van het staatkundige Huis van Thorbecke en de parlementaire democratie. Met de jaren is Thorbecke een wat mythische figuur geworden, een monument. In de eerste volledige biografie sinds jaren brengt Remieg Aerts deze intrigerende staatsman tot leven, in een breed panorama van de politiek, wetenschap en cultuur van de negentiende eeuw.
