A l'orée des années 1980, alors même qu'il semble être en pleine possession de ses moyens photographiques, Bruno Réquillart abandonne la photographie pour la peinture, où tout lui reste pourtant à faire. Bien que brève - guère plus de dix ans - et brutalement interrompue, l'oeuvre qu'il a léguée…à la Mission du Patrimoine Photographique est, à plus d'un titre, emblématique. Culminant à Versailles vers la fin de l'année 1977, son travail paraît s'ancrer, loin de la photographie et de l'art contemporains, dans sa vie même. Versailles est un haut lieu de la géométrie et du classicisme que Réquillart explore avec Atget pour guide, et qu'il nimbe d'une atmosphère empruntée à Steichen. Ces références explicites à l'histoire de la photographie, cette manière de se situer ostensiblement dans la filiation des grands maîtres, témoignent d'une attitude assez nouvelle pour l'époque. Un tournant s'est opéré : une partie de la photographie a décidément rompu avec le domaine de l'utile pour entrer dans celui de l'art. Cette voie que les pictorialistes, et notamment Steichen, ont été les premiers à revendiquer et qui mène résolument la photographie vers l'art, vers un devenir-peinture, Réquillart a su la retrouver. Publié par Marval en 1994, broché avec une couverture souple en très bon état, format 24X27 cm, 65 pages.
