The authorâs exploration of vulgarity in modern drama is harsh, and many would say unfair, in its indictment of popular playwrights like Henry James, Richard Harding Davis, George Ade, and others, accusing them of little more than creating popular works that traffic in the superficialities of human behavior. However, the author reserves their highest scorn for George Bernard Shaw, whose work they find pretentious and whose followers they excoriate in no uncertain terms. The authorâs views on the nature of human beings are equally harsh, as they find little to admire in the tastes and preferences of the public, whom they describe as uniformly vulgar and ill-educated. Given this view of the masses, it is unsurprising that the author sees little value in writing for the stage, or in trying to create plays that adhere closely to standards of realism. Instead, the author believes the playwrightâs duty is to create works that entertain and amuse, even if this means resorting to outlandish scenarios and over-the-top characters. This book has thus earned its place in the history of dramatic criticism, serving as a reminder of the heated debates that often characterize the world of the theater.
