Published as the accompanying catalog for a 1967 exhibition held at the Museum of African Art which was located in a townhouse once owned by African American abolitionist Frederick Douglass (1817/18-1895) in the Capitol Hill neighborhood of Washington, DC. The museum was absorbed into the Smithsonian Institution in August 1979 and, in 1981, was renamed the National Museum of African Art and received it own building on the National Mall in 1987. African art scholarship in the United States was still a relatively nascent field in 1967 as this was prior to the publication of renowned professor Roy Sieber (1923-2001) primary monographs and before his 1983 ascent to Associate Director for Collections and Research at the National Museum of African Art.
