Morris, son of Israel Wistar (1778-1870) and Mary Hollingsworth (1776-1820), a descendent of a prominent seventeenth-century Philadelphia family, received his M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1826. He helped establish the Pennsylvania Institute for the Blind, Protestant Episcopal Hospital, the House of Refuge, and the Protestant Episcopal Church of the Epiphany. His oldest son, James Cheston Morris (1831-ca 1923), mother Ann Cheston (1810-1880), received his M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1854. He was a physician with the Foster Home for Children, Moyamensing House of Industry, the Episcopal Hospital and served as contract physician for the Union Army (October 1862 August 1863). Zustand: Very Good. A very good clean and clear copy in the publisher's ribbed cloth cover. The book combines chemistry with some physics in order for the student to obtain a better understanding of the science. The text is detailed and offers a fine insight into the principles of early 19th chemistry. There are also thirteen (of the total of thirty) chapters devoted to organic chemistry and to natural product chemistry. This offers an additional insight to the prevalent thinking in the early days of organic chemistry. One particular interesting aspect of the text is that the processes given for the preparation of various substances are, with very few exceptions, those followed in the author's private laboratory or in the manufacturing laboratory of the Apothecaries' Hall of Ireland. There are many fine engraved illustrations spread throughout the text that the author states are reproductions of equipment used for his research or for teaching. An excellent text showing that chemistry is, indeed, a formalized science. The Elements of Chemistry was very well received in Britain and the United States and generally considered to be the best chemistry textbook in the English language. Sir Robert Kane (1809-1890) brought radical changes to both scientific research and education in the nineteenth century. He sought to apply research and scientific teaching to the needs of industry and commerce. Robert Kane was one of the leaders in scientific chemistry and an author of the most important papers of the time. Kane was also active in the formation of the Chemical Society in 1841.…
