Erstausgabe
Soft cover. Zustand: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Six-page octavo softcover 1959 amateur playhouse theater program from Oak Ridge, Tennessee (in a nice state of preservation), which acknowledges the generosity of the officials of the town of Dayton, Tenn. for their loan of "the original Scopes trial witness chair." While it might be overstating it a bit to call it "daring" to have staged this successful dramatization of the "Scopes Monkey Trial" in Tennessee only 34 years after the actual event, the production was impressive and we remember it being well received in a town best known for its federal nuclear production facility. (The play debuted in Dallas in early 1955 after being rejected by eight Broadway producers, though it subsequently did move to Broadway, where it starred Paul Muni and Ed Begley.) H. Clyde Claiborn here played defense attorney Henry Drummond (Spencer Tracy's role in the 1960 film), while Fred Johnsson here played Matthew Harrison Brady (Fredric March's role in the film.) Playwright Lawrence later defended the play's historic inaccuracies -- schoolteacher Scopes was never actually arrested for teaching Darwin's theory of evolution, though he was convicted -- by asserting it was written as a "parable" to indict the contemporary efforts of Sen. Joseph McCarthy to expose Communists in the U.S. State Department, the playwright stating "It's not about science versus religion. It's about the right to think." "Very good" original theater program with a few very small brown spots. Reduced from $37.

Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Near Fine. First Edition (stated). FIRST PRINTING of the First Edition (stated). Two students at two of America's most prestigious law schools describe their student experiences, discussing not only the course work and exams, but also the class-ditching, the orgies and hookers, the hard drugs and booze consumed and abused - offering their view that a mere nine days of serious study is sufficient to enter one into a law firm, thus laying waste to the various myths that have caused these once-hallowed institutions to be revered for centuries. Hardcover with dust jacket, 332pp. A nice copy, the jacket neatly encased in an acid-free archival plastic protector. Rare. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Book.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: very good. 332, [2] p. Illustrations. Just how tough are the country's most prestigious law schools? Most alumni would answer with stories of humiliating "Socratic dialogue failures" in the classroom and all-night, caffeine-fueled cram sessions. Until now, the traditional concept of the law-school experience was the one presented in Scott Turow's One-L, published in 1977, a dark description of his first year at Harvard Law School. Twenty-four years later things have definitely changed. Turow's book became the accepted primer-and warning-for aspiring law students, giving them a glimpse of what awaited: grueling nonstop study, brutally competitive classes, endless research, and unfathomable terminology. It described a draconian prison and endless work in the company of equally obsessive, desperate fellow students. Yet, sidestepping terror and intimidation, law students (and new authors) Robert Byrnes and Jaime Marquart entered highly prestigious law schools, did things their own way, earned law degrees, and were hired by a Los Angeles law firm, turning Turow's vision upside down. In their parallel narratives-two twisted, hilarious, blighted, and glorious coming-of-age stories-Byrnes and Marquart explain how they managed to graduate while spending most of their time in the pursuit of pleasure. Byrnes went to Stanford to reinvent himself-after a false start in politics he wanted to explore the life of the mind. It took him virtually no time to discover that the law was neither particularly intriguing nor particularly challenging. He could play around the clock. When Byrnes wasn't biking he was getting drunk and smoking crack. Finding himself when he discovered the right woman, Byrnes finally moved to Los Angelesduring his third year and flew upstate only to take final exams. Born and raised in a small town in Texas, Marquart had never lived outside the state before arriving at Harvard. Amazed at his own good luck, he approached school with all due diligence. Disenchantment followed shortly thereafter, and M. First edition. Stated. First printing [stated].
