Vol 2: [A]2, B-3N4, 3O4 (-3O4, a blank). Both volumes were bound without plates, as commonly. Bound in early American tree calf, joints with unimportant wear, very slightly bumped, spine compartments bordered on top and bottom with three different ornamental rolls in gilt, spine titled in gilt on red morocco spine label in second compartment, fourth compartment has volume number titled in gilt, other compartments contain victory ornament in gilt with weapons and vines, ornamental roll in gilt along edges, "Stroud" printed paper label at foot of spine, marbled endleaves. Textblock edges painted yellow, top edge dusty, small tear along fore-edge of 2H4 of vol. 2 not affecting text, minor some browning and foxing throughout, small stain on pp. 32-37 of vol. 2. Overall an excellent set. Absolutely gorgeous early American tree calf bindings on a text published by a member of the famous Bradford family of printers, the most famous colonial printing family in Philadelphia. The Quaker William Bradford (1663-1752) established Pennsylvania's first printing press in 1686 shortly after emigrating from England. Bradford's grandson, also named William (1719-1791), is considered the most prominent printer during the American Revolution as he became the official printer for the Continental Congress in 1774, printing their "Declaration of Rights" in response to the Intolerable Acts passed by the British Parliament. At the outbreak of the Revolution, William left the printing press in the hands of his son Thomas while he went into military service. Thomas Bradford continued his father's publications and, after his father quit the militia due to an injury he received at the Battle of Princeton, worked in partnership with his father. Thomas took over full-time after William's death in 1791. Thomas's son, Samuel Bradford (1776-1837), the printer of our text, continued the family tradition and became well-known for his new edition of Abraham Rees's "New Cyclopaedia" which he first printed in 1805, supplemented with additions on America and the United States. This "Cyclopaedia," unfortunately, would eventually lead him into bankruptcy. Samuel Bradford also edited a newspaper, "The True American, and Commercial Advertiser," which appeared from 1798-1815. The Bradford Family Papers are held at the Historical Society of Pennsylvania. A timely publication, "Letters of Junius" contains letters written by an anonymous polemicist, Junius, critical of the government of King George III. The present collection was edited by Scottish writer Robert Heron (1764-1807), with an essay on the eloquence of Junius, a discussion of Junius's view of the British Constitution, and some comments on the controversy surrounding Junius's identity, which to this day remains a literary mystery. Into some copies were bound engraved portraits; ours certainly never had them. Strangely, there has been no copy of this edition in auction records since Jan. 1, 1928 (Henkles, lot 371). Evans 6580 & 6851.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. The Letters of Junius. Stat Nominis Umbra. With notes and illustrations, historical, political, biographical, and critical; By Robert Heron. In two volumes Philadelphia. Published by Samuel F. Bradford. 1804. Both volumes hardcover. Bound in handsome three quarter leather, with marbled paper over boards and marbled endpapers. This edition has untrimmed edges, which are uneven and a bit ragged (as issued), but margins are wide and these untrimmed copies are much more scarce than the neat, square ones. The binding is from the nineteenth century; it is not the original binding. But it is beautifully done, and provides boards large enough to protect and contain those untrimmed pages. Raised cords on tooled brown leather. Spine label in black leather with gold lettering. Bookplate on the inside front covers of both volumes, neatly mounted on top of the marbled paper, "John Joseph Henry's Property." Henry was a Revolutionary War soldier, veteran of Benedict Arnold's 1776 attack on Quebec, and eventually a judge in Pennsylvania's second district. He wrote a book on his campaign with Arnold, some years after the war. There is a letter dated 1908 tucked inside the front cover on Historical Society of Pennsylvania letterhead. It reads, "Dear Weaver, I am sending you a slight remembrance of good will and regard. I have selected it from my library because it belong'd to me and also to Judge John Joseph Henry and contains his rare bookplate Sincerely yours, John W. Jordan." Jordan was the librarian of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania. The books themselves are the writings of Junius, a British pamphleteer of the decade immediately preceding the American Revolution. The letters and essays were first published in British periodical and while they are not specifically focused on the US Colonies, they do mention them in passing. They were first published in the US in the 1790's. This edition, printed in Philadelphia in 1804, is from the great Bradford press. The Bradford family held a monopoly on printing in Philadelphia for the first half of the 1700's until Keimer and then Benjamin Franklin opened their presses. Though Franklin stole a healthy percentage of the Bradford business, Bradford remained profitable, and expanded again after Franklin retired and David Hall took over the press.
