Haldeman-Julius was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and was raised in a poor family. He began his career as a journalist and later became interested in social reform and progressive politics. In 1919, Haldeman-Julius founded the Haldeman-Julius Publishing Company, which produced a variety of low-cost books and booklets on a wide range of topics, including literature, history, politics, and philosophy. The company's most famous publication was the "Little Blue Books" series, which consisted of small-format paperbacks that sold for just a few cents each. The "Little Blue Books" series was immensely popular and became one of the most successful publishing ventures of its time.
