Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. 1st Edition. Curious and compelling novel about an old guy, turning his back on a world gone wrong, who convinces himself that aliens from Mars are about to arrive to sort out humanity. So he sits out on his front lawn to wait for them. Pretty soon other people get involved - local rubberneckers, the Air Force, journalists, city officials, etc. and this non-event turns first into a circus and ultimately into a dangerous mob. (And just because the words "Martians" and "flying saucers" are mentioned, doesn't make this a science-fiction novel!) Slightly dusty on edges, but a near fine copy in a very good, slightly rubbed and edgeworn dust jacket, browned on spine and with the price crossed out with a pen. The jacket carries a rather good line drawing, part of which is repeated as a blocked illustration on the front board, but this artwork goes uncredited. Nice copy of an interesting piece of 50's fiction. And no mention of an apology to Ernest Hemingway for the title!

Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good+ dj. Illustrated by (dj painting) Tom Dunn (illustrator). First Edition. [minor shelfwear only to book; the jacket has a few tiny nicks at the base of the spine, modest soiling to the rear panel]. Novel set in an unnamed northern U.S. city, in which the shooting of a black man by police prompts "an investigation of the whole history of Negro-police relations" in the city. Both the topic and the date of publication mark the book as presaging some of the urban racial tensions and unrest of the 1960s, and so it's a bit of a shock to flip it over and discover that the author was a crew-cut, bow-tied white math teacher in Cincinnati. This was the author's second (and last) published novel, although an OCLC search turns up two additional entries that seem to reflect a bit on this one: (1) his Ph.D thesis for the University of Cincinnati, in 1965, entitled "An Analysis of the Attitudes of Junior High School Pupils Toward Police Officers; applied to the preparation of a work of juvenile fiction"; and (2) a 1971 book called "Changing Adolescent Attitudes Toward Police; a practical sourcebook for schools and police departments.".
