In very good condition, here we have a scarce antique copy of "Principia Botanica: or, a Concise and Easy Introduction to the Sexual Botany of Linnaeus," written by Robert Waring Darwin who was the great-uncle of Charles Darwin, the famous evolutionary naturalist. Published in 1810, a third edition by Longman, Hurst, Rees and Orme of London. In a later, fine leather binding. More details below. ***At time of listing there are no other copies for sale anywhere on the internet.*** A 326-page guide laid out in clear, scannable columns and tables. Written to help students easily navigate Carl Linnaeus's "Sexual System" of plant classification. Featuring three comprehensive indexes linking common English plant names to their formal Latin genera. Inside the pages are clean and tightly bound. Has an inked name at the top of the title page, also the odd word or pencil tick in the text - but nothing too obtrusive. Unillustrated. Untrimmed fore-edge. Some tanning to the outer page edges. Newer endpapers which would have been added when the later leather re-binding was done. In a fine, full-polished calf-leather with blind stamped border decoration to the upper front and lower back panels. Five raised bands to the spine, with ornate gilt decoration in the compartments. All very good indeed, just a few light scuffs to the spine - but minor. A lovely looking volume. H 24 cm x W 16 cm, 326 pages plus indices, 0.61 kg. Pamphlet, 4to, approximately 290 x 200 mm, 11½ x 8½ inches, pages: 2 title pages, (title page duplicated) 1-36, padded out with blank pages at rear, lacking original blue wrappers, rebound in modern half morocco over marbled boards, gilt lettered green label, gilt rules, gilt date to foot of spine, blind decoration to spine, marbled endpapers. Pale age-browning to first title page, otherwise a very good clean copy. Reprinted later in Zoonomia with plates. Robert Waring Darwin FRS was an English medical doctor who today is best known as the father of the naturalist Charles Darwin. He was a member of the influential DarwinWedgwood family. Robert Darwin provided the first empirical evidence that small eye movements are made even when people attempt to keep them fixed. This he found during his studies of the after images of colored stimuli in which he noticed that while a person tried to fixate a colored circle, a lucid edge appeared on the adjacent white-paper background. He concluded "as by the unsteadiness of the eye a part of the fatigued retina falls on the white paper". Wikipedia.
