This book provides a fresh perspective on the history and development of English satirical art, from its ancient roots to contemporary trends. The author's unique approach focuses on the tension between artistic invention and literal depiction, examining how both elements contribute to the creation of powerful and effective caricatures. By tracing the evolution of caricature techniques and themes over time, this book offers insights into the social and political climate of different eras. Exploring works by renowned caricaturists such as William Hogarth, Gillray, and George Cruikshank, the author analyzes the use of exaggeration, distortion, and symbolism to convey messages and critique societal norms. Ultimately, the book explores the complex relationship between humor, satire, and the human experience, highlighting the role of caricature as a potent tool for social commentary and artistic expression. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

In den WarenkorbRobert Seymour; Hablot K. Browne (Phiz); Robert William Buss (illustrator). A well presented early edition of Dickens celebrated first novel, The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club, published by Chapman and Hall, London, 1837, complete with illustrations by R Seymour and Phiz. First issued in parts and initially a modest commercial venture, Pickwick Papers quickly became a cultural phenomenon, transforming Dickens into a literary force almost overnight. Its blend of humour, character and social observation helped define the Victorian novel and established the foundation for Dickens later masterpieces. This copy is bound in a handsome half leather binding with marbled boards, raised bands and gilt titling to the spine. The binding remains firm and attractive, showing expected light wear consistent with age, with a strong shelf presence. The volume is illustrated throughout, retaining the engraved plates that were central to its original success. Of particular note, this copy contains interesting associated material. To the front is inserted a printed pamphlet titled The Life of Charles Dickens, published by Haughton and Co, together with an additional printed auction listing relating to the book. These later additions provide an added layer of historical context, reflecting the continued readership and collecting interest surrounding Dickens works in the nineteenth century. Internally, the book shows moderate foxing throughout, more pronounced to the preliminary leaves, but remains clean and entirely readable. The text block is sound, and the plates are present.

In den WarenkorbCloth. Zustand: Very Good. Robert William Buss (illustrator). A limited edition copy of this Victorian novel. With twelve colour illustrations by Robert William Buss. This limited edition copy of Captain Frederick Marryat's novel is illustrated with colour plates by Robert William Buss. With five colour plates to volume I, and seven colour plates to volume II, collated and complete. This two-volume novel is centred on the lives the Thames watermen, and the episodes of the eponymous character's life that lead him to the Royal navy. Marrayat was himself a Royal Navy, and had a system of maritime flag signalling named after him. A noted pioneer of nautical fiction, the author was also an acquaintance of Charles Dickens. The illustrator of the present work is best known for his large watercolour, Dickens's dream. The majority of pages to this volume are untrimmed. In the publisher's original blue cloth binding. Externally, generally smart. Lightly rubbed to the boards and the spine, with a little bumping to the head and tail of the spine. The front hinge is starting, but firm to volume II. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally clean with the occasional mark. Very Good. book.

In den WarenkorbFirst edition, early issue. Contemporary full green morocco, possibly a presentation or publisher's 'super deluxe' binding, decorated in gilt to the upper and lower boards. Four wide gilt ruled raised bands, gilt decorated compartments and titles in gilt to the spine. Gilt decorated board edges and inner dentelles. All edges gilt. Bound from the parts. Engraved frontispiece, vignette title and 41 plates [43 in total, as called for]. First state of engraved title page (Veller) and the two suppressed plates by R. W. Buss present (facing pages 69 and 74). All 7 Seymour plates are present as called for and the Phiz plates are in the earliest state (page numbers, without publisher's imprint). A very good copy indeed, the binding square and firm with minor wear to the extremities, small nick (without loss) to the upper left corner of the front board. Tiny retailer's label 'G. Simms, Manchester' to the upper left corner of the front pastedown, the ownership name of 'L. Garnett' in ink to the front endpaper and a pencilled name 'C. Garnett Esq' to the head of the title page. The plates are spotted and darkened at the edges to various degrees; the text pages with just the odd spot of foxing to the margins are otherwise clean throughout. An attractive, entirely unsophisticated example of Dickens' first novel, in the earliest state, containing the suppressed Buss plates and six of the seven Hatton and Cleaver first issue points within the text (that of p.25, noted as present in only one copy). First published in 19 monthly parts over 20 months between March 1836 and October 1837. (Smith: Dickens in Original Cloth Vol. I, 3; Hatton and Cleaver: A Bibliography of the Periodical Works of Charles Dickens). Further details and images for any of the items listed are available on request. Lucius Books welcomes direct contact with our customers.

In den WarenkorbFirst edition in book-form variant deluxe publisher's binding in original half burgundy morocco, green moirë watermarked satin cloth covered sides, black and gilt title lettering label and elaborate tools to the spine, marble end papers and text block edges, original silk tie. 8vo. 8¾'' x 5¾''. Variant deluxe publisher's bindings are known, including states in green moirë and half morocco (as here) and full morocco. Academics seem to have dismissed the variant bindings altogether, and as so little is known about the existence of these, a precedence has not been set. Being generally a mixed issue as described below, etched plates by Robert Seymour, H. K. Browne ('Phiz'), including 1 (of 2) suppressed plates by Robert William Buss, page 69 not present, page 74 present, stab marks present. A notoriously difficult book bibliographically. Several first issue points present: 'Weller' rather than 'Veller' on the inn sign but with first issue point with Phiz peut on the engraved title page. This copy with Directions to the Binder leaf with 6 line errata on verso; pages 25-26 a single inset leaf; that and the following leaf both bearing the signature mark 'E'; frontispiece stool has four stripes, a middle shield and signed Phiz Fecit (later there were five stripes); engraved title page reads 'Weller' (second plate) instead of 'Veller'; page 260 line 29, 'hodling' for 'holding'; page 261, line 6 'Picvick' for 'Pickwick'; page 267 '7' in page number slightly raised; pages 282 and 299 both with 'Chapters XXVIII'; page 303 lacking last '3'; page 341, line 1 has correct 'inde-licate'; page 341-2 is in an early state (Hatton & Cleaver, variant C C 2); page 342, line 5, uncorrected 'S. Veller'; page 432, the 'F' in headline is imperfect; page 553, 9 lines up 'Considdring for Considering'. Contains frontispiece, engraved title page, [xiv], 2, 609 printed pages of text with 41 illustrations throughout. Additional leaf bound after the third front free end paper with hand written notes concerning this being a first edition in original binding, below which a press clipping has been pasted with the title 'Dickens and Pickwick in Court'. Joints professionally repaired, some toning and foxing to plates as usual. Member of the P.B.F.A. DICKENS, Charles (1812-1870).
