Created during his travels along the Nile in the 1830s, Roberts' work documented temples, ruins, and landscapes with exceptional detail, helping introduce the grandeur of ancient Egypt to a European audience. Produced in the wake of Napoleon's Egyptian Campaign and the surge of scholarly and popular interest it generated, these lithographs played a critical role in shaping early Egyptology. They depict major sacred sites such as Karnak, Luxor, and Abu Simbel not only as architectural landmarks, but as living centers of religious belief tied to deities including Ra, Amun, Osiris, and Isis. The accompanying text places these images within the broader historical and mythological framework of ancient Egypt. It traces the development of religious thought from the Old Kingdom through the New Kingdom, drawing on sources such as the Pyramid Texts, Coffin Texts, and the Book of the Dead to explain how myth informed burial practices, kingship, and the concept of the afterlife. By integrating mythology with the historical moment of its rediscovery, this volume offers a dual perspective: an introduction to the symbolic world of ancient Egyptian religion, and an account of how that world was recorded and interpreted during the formative years of modern archaeological study.
