Sir Henry Rolle (c.1589-1656) was Chief Justice of the King's Bench. While involved in the practice of law, Rolle spent much of his leisure time writi…ng reports and abridgments of cases. The second volume is signed F Berkeley on the title page could be Frederick Augustus Berkeley, 5th Earl of Berkeley (1745 - 1810) Lowndes p2120. Wing R1875. The work influenced the US Founding Fathers. George Wythe (1726-1806) owned a copy, and Thomas Jefferson recommended a copy for the University of Virginia Library. A well preserved copy with some wear to the corners otherwise internally clean.
LEOPOLD VON LEDEBOUR (1876-1955) Freiherr, deutscher Schauspieler / german actor. Seit 1916 wirkte er in Filmen mit und verkörperte 1918 in seiner ersten bedeutenden Rolle in der Opernadaption Carmen den Stierkämpfer Escamillo. Leopold von Ledebur (links) mit Henry Bender, 1932 35 Jahre lang stellte Ledebur in Nebenrollen vorwiegend respektgebietende Persönlichkeiten wie Minister, Direktoren, Generäle, Polizeichefs, Richter, Ärzte und Rittergutsbesitzer dar, seltener Diener, Nachbarn und Kollegen. Light rubbing and a few shallow scuffs to boards, moderate rubbing to extremities with some wear to spine ends and corners, front board of Volume I partially detached, front board of Volume II detached, its front free endpaper lacking, twentieth-century owner name (Alfred Robert Young/ Ramsgate) and note reading "Re-bound 1948" to front pastedowns. Moderate toning to interiors, light foxing, light soiling and spark burns in a few places, first leaf of second part partially detached, torn, edgeworn and lightly soiled, underlining and brief annotations, some in an 18th-century hand, others in two 20th-century hands, to a few places in each book, early owner name (L. The third, and last, abridgment to contain Year Book cases, this work was consulted and cited as frequently as the abridgments of Fitzherbert and Brooke. As Holdsworth notes, "[Rolle] marks a new departure in the literature of abridgments. The older abridgments had simply digested Year Book cases under alphabetical headings. Their great defect was the heterogeneous character of the entries collected under each alphabetical head. (.) Rolle's Abridgment to some extent remedied this defect--each topic was divided.into separate headings. But what distinguishes it more markedly from the abridgments of the older type is the fact that it is more than a digest of case law. It contains summaries both of Parliamentary records and of statutes; And therefore it comes nearer than the old abridgments came to being a digest.

Light rubbing and some minor nicks, scuffs and scratches to boards, corners bumped and somewhat worn, bookplate residue to front pastedowns, hinges starting. Moderate toning to interiors, light foxing in places, worming at center and rear of text block of Volume I with minor loss to text on a few leaves, some creasing and light edgewear to endleaves. $2,500. * First edition. This is a English translation of Rolle's Abridgment des Plusiers Cases et Resolutions del Common Ley (1668), up to the letter "E," with substantial editorial additions and the addition of later cases by D'Anvers. (Despite later supplements, he never completed his work on this book.) The third, and last, abridgment to contain Year Book cases, Rolle's Abridgment was consulted and cited as frequently as those of Fitzherbert and Brooke. More important, as Holdsworth notes, it marked "a new departure in the literature of abridgments" because it was better organized and included summaries of Parliamentary records and statutes.
