Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. 1. Cloth, dj. Minor shelf wear. Else a bright, clean copy. The legacy of graphic artist William Hogarth (1697-1764) remains so emphatic that even his last name has evolved into a common vernacular term referring to his characteristically scathing form of satire. Featuring rarely seen images and written contributions from leading scholars, this book showcases a collection of the artist's works gathered from the Lewis Walpole Library at Yale University and other repositories. It attests to the idiosyncratic nature of his style and its international influence, which continues to incite aesthetic and moral debate among critics. The eight essays by eminent Hogarth experts help to further contextualize the artist's unique narrative strategies, embedding the work within German philosophical debates and the moral confusion of the Victorian period and emphasizing the social and political dimensions that are part and parcel of its profound impact. Endlessly parodied and emulated, Hogarth's distinctive satire persists in its influence throughout the centuries and this publication provides the necessary lens through which to view it. Distributed for the Lewis Walpole Library.

Paperback. Black and white wraps with color illustration and lettering in red and white. 168 pp. BW and color illustrations. Portraits. "Perhaps the most influential and best loved of all twentieth-century sculptors, Alexander Calder worked primarily in Connecticut after settling in a Roxbury farmhouse in 1933. Connecticut provided a richly stimulating creative environment for him in the critical years when he developed his unique mobiles and stabiles and established his artistic reputation. This intimate and engaging portrait of Calder, at work and at play, offers new insight into how his art was shaped by the state's landscape, his home and studio, his family, and the fascinating circle of artists, writers, curators, and collectors who befriended him. Engaging and authoritative, this visual biography includes many previously unpublished photographs, documents, and reproductions of little-known art works. An account of the home and studio by Alexander S.C. Rower, Calder's grandson, and an affectionate tribute by Calder's neighbor, playwright Arthur Miller, complete the volume, produced in conjunction with a major exhibition at the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art, Hartford."--Publisher's description. VG- light wear to extremities, minor scuffing to wraps.

Hardcover. Zustand: new. Hardcover. The first book-length study of Horace Walpoles scandalous The Mysterious Mother, including critical essays, an abridged script, and a facsimile edition Horace Walpoles five-act tragedy The Mysterious Mother (1768), a sensational tale of incest and intrigue, was initially circulated only among the authors friends. Walpole never permitted it to be performed during his lifetime except as a private theatrical. He described his play as a delicious entertainment for the closet and claimed that he did not think it would do for the stage. Yet the essays in this volume trace a history of private readings, amateur theatricals, and even early public performances, demonstrating that the play was read and performed more than Walpoles protests suggest. Exploring a wide variety of topicsincluding the plays crypto-Catholicism, its treatments of incest, guilt, motherhood, orphans, and scientific spectacle, and the complex relations between print and performancethe essays demonstrate the rich relevance of The Mysterious Mother to current critical discussions. The volume includes the proceedings of a mini-conference hosted at Yale University in 2018 on the occasion of a staged reading of the play. Also included are the directors reflections, an abridged script, a facsimile of Walpoles own copy of the full-length play, and reproductions of the illustrations he commissioned from Lady Diana Beauclerk. The first book-length study of Horace Walpoles scandalous The Mysterious Mother, including critical essays, an abridged script, and a facsimile edition Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.
