Il carteggio tra Giorgio de Chirico e il mercante americano Germain Seligmann getta una nuova luce sui reali risultati del lungo soggiorno newyorchese dell'artista tra l'agosto 1936 e l'inizio di gennaio 1938. Il viaggio di de Chirico in America, presentato come un trionfo dalla stampa italiana, fu in realtà un insuccesso, dovuto in parte alle manovre che l'artista mise in atto, seguendo una vecchia abitudine, per contrapporre al suo primo e più sincero sostenitore, il gallerista Julien Levy, altri mercanti più facoltosi e di grande nome, ma meno motivati, come Seligmann o Wildenstein, con la speranza di ottenerne maggiori vantaggi. La strategia si dimostrò fallimentare ed ebbe l'effetto di chiudere completamente le porte del mercato americano alla produzione recente dell'artista. Lo studio si conclude con una meticolosa catalogazione delle opere nominate nel testo, che vengono in parte identificate portando un notevole contributo a un futuro catalogo ragionato dell'opera di Giorgio de Chirico.
