As correspondent for the Guardian Rory McCarthy spent two and a half years on the ground. His brilliantly compelling, insightful book focuses on the lives of a group of Iraqis in order to retell the story from their point of view. This book is a collection of some of the conversations and interviews and happenings with 'ordinary' Iraqis and with people trying to get by in a place that's falling apart after the fall of Saddam Hussein. He brings out more of the subtleties of the Iraqi situation and you get a good understanding of just how many chances were missed. Reading what the Iraqis here say, the choice of the US and the UK to divide up the power along sectarian lines and destroy the Ba'ath party made the current civil war much more likely. The lives of the people here are fragmented by a rising tide of aggression and revenge. McCarthy writes well, and allows the people in the book enough space to give the background in their words as well as his.
