Attraverso la riflessione critica sui modi e le finalità della rappresentazione artistica si precisa il compito di definire modi e finalità della rappresentazione scientifica, di edificare una scienza matematica della natura. Se la prospettiva dei pittori mostra l'opportunità di definire un piano che intercetti l'immagine visiva, separando l'occhio che vede dall'oggetto osservato, per Leonardo il pittore deve "diventare mente della natura stessa e farsi interprete tra natura e arte". L'indagine condotta nel presente volume non segue la storia della filosofia della natura né intende offrire un ulteriore approfondimento nell'analisi del rapporto tra la cultura del Rinascimento e l'origine della scienza moderna, ma si concentra su alcuni motivi che hanno contribuito alla formazione dell'ideale scientifico di Leonardo e sui riflessi di questo ideale nelle trasformazioni dell'immagine fisica del mondo. Contempla un duplice obiettivo: mettere in risalto una correlazione prospettica Leonardo-Leibniz, tra geometria naturale e creatività matematica, e sensibilizzare lo sguardo ai caratteri di un'armonia universale che dalla mente della natura si trasmette all'arte della scienza. It was only in the twentieth century that quantum theory showed how probability might be molded from complex numbers and defined the notion of 'complex probability amplitude'. From a theoretical point of view, however, the space opened to painting by linear perspective and that opened to science by complex numbers share significant characteristics. The Art of Science explores this shared field with the purpose of extending Leonardo's vision of painting to issues of mathematics and encouraging the reader to see science as an art. The intention is to restore a visual dimension to mathematical sciences - an element dulled, if not obscured, by historians, philosophers, and scientists themselves.
