Das Kommando der Légion fidèle (auch Légion romande oder Bataillon Rovéréa genannt) wurde dem jungen waadtländischen Adligen Ferdinand Isaak de Rovéréa übertragen. Die vorwiegend aus Bauern und Handwerkern zusammengesetzte Truppe erreichte einen Höchstbestand von 620 Mann, aufgeteilt in fünf Kompanien. Die Légion fidèle sammelte sich bei Kallnach. Am 5.3.1798 kam es zum Gefecht von St. Niklaus (Gemeinde Merzligen) gegen Einheiten des französischen Generals Schauenburg. Die Nachricht vom Fall Berns provozierte den Rückzug und drei Tage später die Kapitulation der Légion fidèle."
