Hardcover. Zustand: Fair. No Jacket. Book Club Edition. This is a fictional story- fast paced, exciting, richly textured with memorable characters. Yet we think you will find it more than a story. It could be about your airport too. Lincoln International Airport calls itself boastfully: Aviation Crossroads of the World. Yet thos…e with inside knowledge- like Mel Bakersfield, the airport's brilliant yet career-jinxed general manager- are aware of grave deficiencies. Operational areas are outmoded to the point of danger; air traffic control is overtaxed; the supposedly- modern glass and chrome main terminal has become a whited sepulcher. Against this background is set a dramatic, behind-scenes story of seven eventful airport hours during a mid-winter snowstorm, and of the men and women- with pressures, passions and problems of their own-who share them. You will meet: Joe Patroni, cocky and genial airline maintenance chief, striving to clear a disabled aircraft from an urgently needed runway; Air Traffic Controller Keith Bakersfeld, suffering stress and conscience stricken by the memory of an air disaster for which he was responsible; Tanya Livingston, passenger relations agent (and attractive divorcee) whose suspicions, triggered by a sharp-eyed Customs Inspector, reveal an unsuspected crisis; Captain (and check pilot) Vernon Demerest, arrogant, admired by women, and despising "ground bound penguins,' especially Airport Commissioners; Elliot Freemantle, crusading lawyer, leading a group of homeowners incensed by airport noise; Gwen Meighen, hot tempered English brunette from "Stewardess Row;" Ada Quonsett, a prim old lady who explains her so-easy techniques as an aerial stowaway; D.O. Guerrero, a psychotic with a homemade bomb.and many others. round bound penguins," especially Airport Commissioners; Elliot Freemantle, crusading lawyer, leading a group of home owners incensed by airport noise; Gwen Meighen, a hot tempered English brunette from "Stewardess Row;" Ada Quonsett, a prim old lady who (illustrator).

Arthur William Row (1878-1961) was a professional actor, writer, and producer with a lengthy career in the theater. Throughout his career, he associated himself with many legendary performers of the 19th and early 20th centuries. He was born in Montreal, Canada on June 12, 1878 and moved with his family to Boston in 1893. Row attended Tufts College in Massachusetts from 1897 to 1901, majoring in English, with the intention of becoming a writer. During college, he decided instead to become an actor and applied to Boston's Castle Square Theatre Stock Company. Row achieved his first major production role in 1899 in Minnie Maddern Fiske's Becky Sharp. From that point forward, he was heavily involved with the theatre and performed with the Barrymores, Herbert Beerbohm Tree, Otis Skinner, and in more modern productions such as Orson Welles' 1937 production of Julius Caesar, and A Streetcar Named Desire with Uta Hagen. In 1919, Row helped found the Afternoon Theatre and produced several plays, most notably Aglavaine and Selysette starring Eva Le Gallienne. Arthur Row's association with Sarah Bernhardt began in 1913 when he wrote an article about her for The New Age. Bernhardt enjoyed the piece and invited Row to meet her. Three years later, Bernhardt's manager William F. Connor asked Row to be the press representative for Madame Sarah's 1916-17 Farewell American tour. He published a great many articles about her and continued to do so after the tour was finished. He wrote a series called Memories of Sarah Bernhardt for The Younger Set magazine and in the late 1940's wrote a book titled Sarah The Divine. First Edition. Inscribed by author. In den Warenkorb3pp., 12mo. Bifolium. In fair condition, on aged and unevenly-sunned paper. He begins by giving six numbered points which 'will do for the Introduction' to a prospectus for a magazine. The first reads: 'The biographical & archaeological portion of the Magazine will be placed under the superintendance of the Revd Professor Christ…mas, M.A. F.R.S.' The succeeding points refer to other sections, with the names of those in charge of three of them added later: 'Biblical Illustrations and religious information' ('Mr Power'); 'Natural History & General Science' ('Mr Wood'); 'Literature and Poetry Reviews' (' Baynes'). He considers it 'quite necessary to have some name for each of the above but especially nos II & III'. He concludes: 'written to Messrs Wood & Morris', but does not have their addresses. 'with regard to Poetry I would say | A series of poems chiefly original and chosen, when selected, from the works of the most gifted writers of Devotional Poetry will appear in the successive numbers of the Magazine under the title of "Lyra Evangelica" It is contemplated after a certain time to form these into a volume - which it is hoped may be acceptable to the Christian Church'. Christmas edited the Church of England Quarterly Review (1840-1843 and 1854-1858), The Churchman (1840-1843), the British Churchman (1845-1848), and the Literary Gazette (1859-1860).

In den WarenkorbDisbound. Zustand: Fair. First Edition. 16mo; vi, (2), 120 pages; Sold by T. Kinnersley in St. Paul's Church-Yard; and to be had of all other Booksellers in Town and Country. OCLC 504455151 ESTC t126448 This book lacks most of the leather backstrip and the entire rear board; the front calf covered board is present, but detached.… The ffep and title page are still attached to the front board; the rest of the text block are held firmly by the original stitching and remainder of the spine. Text is clean, but for a couple brief pencil notes, marking where the reader left off. Quite a scarce volume; a good cadidate for rebinding. "Most of the pieces in this entertaining miscellany originally appeared in Lloyd's Evening Post." These anonymously published essays skip from a reminiscence of the author's charming youthful infatuation with his nurse and a string of other women into adulthood, to a day at an auction house, to his arrival at Bath and an odd "exchange" of verses with one "Jack Meggot." A few years later "Honest Ranger" published a second book A Visit to the Ideal World (1763). This author who published under the psedonym "Honest Ranger" has variously been identified as Arthur Murphy or John Ingledew, but is to be distinguished from the "Honest Ranger" who published the infamous Harrisâs List of the ladies of Covent Garden.
