A letter from Herbert Augustus Rowe to a friend, Walter, discussing goings on at Dartmouth in 1891. Most of the letter focuses on sporting events including class competition and games between other New England schools including Harva…rd. "You have probably heard of '94 (Rowe's class) great victory in athletics, beating '92, 87 to 61 points." He continues, "I took first in mile, for which I received the customary silver medal, and second on the two mile run for which I received a fine pair of kid gloves." Other sports include tennis, baseball, and football. "Did you see the game between our team and Harvard's in football? All the alumni who witnessed the game declared it the best exhibition of playing by Dartmouth team that they had ever seen." In another part of the letter he writes, "It is certain that the team work of our team is excellent, and provided, Amherst and Williams have no improved corresponding in their teamwork, it seems that Dartmouth should have once again the championship in football." Rowe criticizes, "the cry "tackle low" so often necessitated last year, is now almost redundant." A nice letter discussing Darthmouth athletics in the 1890s.
