Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This revealing compendium encapsulates the essential laws that defined the governance and society of the Tokugawa shogunate in feudal Japan. Promulgated by shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu, this comprehensive collection of ordinances and regulations provides a unique glimpse into the legal framework that shaped the political, social, and economic landscape of a pivotal period in Japanese history. The 100 Laws, along with the accompanying 18 Edicts, delineate the shogunate's meticulous attention to detail in regulating everything from the behavior of samurai to the duties of administrators and the rights of ordinary citizens. By examining the intricate tapestry of these laws, this book not only contributes to our understanding of Tokugawa Japan but also offers a broader perspective on the evolution of law and society in pre-industrial societies worldwide.
