First edition of the Gospels in Amharic. Abu Rumi (ca. 1750-1819) is remembered as the translator of the first complete Bible in Amharic, the national language of…Ethiopia. Previously, only partial Amharic translations had existed, and the Ethiopian Bible existed only in Ge'ez, the ancient liturgical language of Ethiopia. Abu Rumi's story is recorded by William Jowett: he was educated in the Ethiopian Orthodox Church, but it is not clear if he was a monk, priest, or had any official status within the church. - According to Jowett, Abu Rumi served as a translator for the Scots explorer James Bruce at the age of 22. Abu Rumi left Ethiopia in his 28th year, visiting Cairo, Jerusalem, Syria and India, where he resided in the house of Sir William Jones. "We are not told what he is supposed to have taught that great orientalist", writes Edward Ullendorff, "but presumably it was a smattering of Ge'ez and Amharic poetry" (Ullendorff, p. 66). - While travelling through Cairo, at which time his age is estimated at "about fifty or fifty-five years" (Jowett), Abu Rumi became very ill and was taken in by M. Jean-Louis Asselin de Cherville (1772-1822), the French Consul in Cairo. He provided Abu Rumi with food, lodging, and medical care, as well as, more significantly, writing materials. Over a period of ten years, Abu Rumi produced his complete translation of the Bible into Amharic. He then made one more journey to Jerusalem, dying of the plague in Cairo. - The manuscript containing his translation was eventually purchased by William Jowett on behalf of the British and Foreign Bible Society. He took it back to Britain, where it was typeset and printed. These printed copies were sent back to Ethiopia. There were a number of editions, different editors making some changes, but the original work is that of Abu Rumi. - A copy of Abu Rumi's Amharic Bible translation was found in a monastery in the early 1860s and launched a church renewal movement that eventually led to the founding of the Ethiopian Evangelical Church Mekane Yesus. - One or two minor stains; contemporary blind-stamped calf; worn and rubbed, foot of spine chipped. - From the library of Archibald Smith-Sligo (1815-91), with bookplate. - Darlow/Moule 1556. A very good example of the first issue of the complete New Testament in Amharic, preceeded by the four Gospels in 1824; the complete Bible was issued in 1840. Il n'existait auparavant que des traductions partielles en amharique, et la bible éthiopienne existait seulement en langue Ge'ez. Le manuscrit en fut acquis par William Jowett au bénéfice de la British and Foreign Bible Society. Le présent exemplaire est parfaitement conforme à la collation indiquée par Fumagalli dans sa Bibliografia Etiopica, 1384 : "Questo Nuovo Testamento si compono dei Vangeli del 1824 e degli altri liberi stampati nel 1829. Il volume ha il seguente registro : da B a 2R (fine dei Vangeli), da B* a DDD*, piu la segn. DDD*** e i due frontesp. latino ed amarico. Il quad. 2R non ha che due carte". La reliure d'origine est conservée, mais a été renforcée à l'adhésif. Hormis un très petit travail de vers marginal en début d'ouvrage, le texte est d'une fraîcheur remarquable. The first complete New Testament published in Amharic. The translator, Abu Rumi, was an Abyssinian monk. He was helped by M. Asselin de Cherville, French consul in Cairo. The editor was P. T. Platt, (1798-1852), librarian of the British and Foreign Bible Society, assisted by Samuel Lee, professor of Arabic at Cambridge. They bought the manuscript of the Bible for 1250.00 £.
