Hemos tratado cubrir todos los detalles necesarios de la detección, análisis y manejo de la catarata pediátrica. Las cataratas pediátricas son comunes y representan una de las causas más tratables de discapacidad visual en esta población, que persiste a lo largo de la vida. Al presente, el único tratamiento conocido para la catarata es la remoción quirúrgica del cristalino opaco. Este procedimiento usualmente es seguido de la colocación de un lente intraocular (LIO),sea al momento de la cirugía o posterior en la infancia. El manejo de las cataratas congénitas y de la infancia es un mayor reto que en adultos. Las dificultades intraoperatorias, la propensión al aumento de la inflamación posoperatoria y el estado cambiante de la refracción del ojo pueden hacer más compleja la toma de decisiones perioperatorias. Las complicaciones posoperatorias más comunes, tales como opacificación de la cápsula, membranas secundarias, y glaucoma posoperatorio así como tendencia a la ampliopía, todas aumentan la dificultad para lograr un buen resultado. Las cataratas pediátricas serán motivo de consulta en casi todos los oftalmólogos, pero la mayoría de los cirujanos no se sienten cómodos completamente con las opciones terapéuticas.
