Gerbert was a prolific writer and editor, and his work had a major impact on the study of church music and liturgy. Gerbert's research focused on the early history of Christian music and liturgy, and he traveled extensively to collect source materials from libraries and archives throughout Europe. His work helped to establish the study of liturgy as a scholarly discipline, and his editions of early music manuscripts remain important resources for musicians and scholars today. One of Gerbert's most important contributions was his work on the history of Gregorian chant. He was the first scholar to systematically study the development of chant, and his work helped to establish the chant repertoire that is still used in the Catholic Church today. Gerbert also wrote extensively about the history of musical instruments, and his work helped to revive interest in the use of early instruments in church music. Gerbert's work was also important for its impact on the Benedictine Order. He was a strong advocate for the renewal of monastic life, and his work helped to inspire a revival of interest in the Benedictine tradition. Gerbert's work continues to be studied and valued by scholars and musicians today, and he is considered one of the most important figures in the history of church music.
