Communal reservation is the burning issue in India. The present study is an attempt to analyse the different stages of evolution and expansion of reservation policy till 1991 in Tamil Nadu. Regarding this policy, Tamil Nadu is considered as a pioneer state in India. At the beginning reservation was purely the work of the Britishers. Though they adopted the divide and rule policy to prolong their rule in India, they laid a strong foundation for the reservation scheme in disguise. Their reform works have brought out radical changes in the social structure of Tamil Nadu. Among the factors responsible for the contemporary change in the Tamil society the policy of reservation has been definitely a leading one for creating socio political awareness among the masses. Further it is one of the means to solve social problems and to attain social equality. It definitely provided rights and opportunities to unprivileged and under privileged sections of the people.
