Sammelband containing the first editions of two significant astronomical textbooks: an influential edition of Sacrobosco's De Sphaera with scholia by the Renaissance humanist Ãlie Vinet, supplement by Giovan Pietro Pierio Valeriano, and treatise on climates by Pedro Nuñez; and Caspar Peucer's Elementa Doctrinae de Circulis Coelestibus. Unsophisticated in contemporary vellum. The Tractatus de Sphaera was the most important astronomy textbook of the medieval and early modern period. Composed around 1230 by Johannes de Sacrobosco, a scholar at the University of Paris, it circulated in manuscript for over two centuries, becoming in 1472 one of the first scientific books to be printed. By the early 17th century, right up to the time of Newton, more than two hundred editions had been published. Sacrobosco is here 'mainly concerned with the circles on the sphere â" the equator, the tropics of Cancer and Capricorn, the ecliptic, the meridian and horizon. It is often said that the book is a simple version of Ptolemy's Almagest (140 C.E.), but there very little of what we call Ptolemaic astronomy in it â" a single mention of epicycles and deferents, with no indication of how to use them to predict planetary motion' (Ashworth, 'Johannes de Sacrobosco', Linda Hall Library). Of particular importance for the history of science, Sacrobosco argues 'every which way from Sunday that the Earth is a sphere' and his figure for the Earth's circumference, 25,000 miles, comes close to the modern calculation (Ashworth). Caspar Peucer (1525-1602) was a student and son-in-law of Melanchthon who became a leading mathematician, and astronomer at the University of Wittenburg, as well as advisor and physician to the Elector of Saxony. His Elementa Doctrinae was a basic textbook on spherical astronomy that took the geocentric position. It was successful, being republished several times.

A remarkable survivor, clearly a student's copy of Sacrobosco's Libellus de Sphaera, printed in 1558, with the student's inscription at the bottom of the title page, and a question and answer styled study guide bound at the rear (1560, by Hartmann Beyer). The shared shelfmark from the title page to the…binding indicates the wallet-style binding may be contemporary to the book. Also, this copy still retaining its broadside with the locations of the sun updated (since the 365.25 days per calendar year causes yearly drift in the location of the sun by day, since the true day is slightly shorter). Sacrobosco's work was first produced around 1230, a text book dedicated to spherical astronomy. Although Sacrobosco did use the Earth as central to all rotation, his methods of finding the locations of stars, the sun and moon based on elliptical patterns was fairly reliable and became the standard of students for centuries to come. He also correctly identified the world as a sphere. By 1558, the idea of the Earth as the center of the universe was largely dispelled, but Sacrobosco's calculations and tables were so good that they were yet to be replaced, so academies were updating to accommodate the new science. This copy has the commentary and editing of several 16th century scholars, Philip Melanchthon and Erasmus Reinhold, as well as a second book with commentary of Hartmann Beyer. The university usage of this copy is clear, and to be noted. The scholar, one Wolfgang, notes at the bottom of the title page that he is studying physics. The 17th century date of study denotes that an older book was still acceptable in studies. Yet, despite the later date, the binding contains both the 1558 Sacrobosco, and (essentially) a 1560 study guide, posing the question, "Has this book been used for study before Wolfgang wrote in it?" A mystery is the Cistercian monastery also holding the work. Did they possess the book before or after Wolfgang? Or, was it from a different Cistercian monastery that was dissolved during the protestant reformation years leading up to Wolfgang's study? Summary Calendar calculations held a significant place in medieval education. They were used to determine movable feasts like Easter and Pentecost for a given year, calculate the day of the week… for specific dates, and determine the moon's age, i.e., how many days had passed since the last new moon. Various tools were employed for these tasks, including key numbers for years, months, and festivals, calculation rules with or without the use of fingers, tables, and mnemonic verses. Given the importance of calendar calculations, it is not surprising that numerous contemporary texts comprehensively covered this subject. The current edition includes 15 texts from the period 1103 to 1232, 14 of which have not been printed before. Only the most successful of these texts, written by Johannes de Sacrobosco, was first printed in 1538 and subsequently in many other editions. The rich content of the texts published here is made accessible through several indexes, including an alphabetical subject index. Very good, well-margined and handsomely illustrated copy of the first edition of this important collection on Ptolemaic astronomy intended for students, and the most widely used of the early modern period. Johannes de Sacrobosco (or Holywood, 1195-1256) was a monk and astronomer who taught at Paris. His ground-breaking works were extremely influential in the medieval period; they focused on astronomy and mathematics including the Hindu-Arabic numeral system, a study of the shortcomings of the Julian calendar (anticipating C16 debates) and his treatise 'Sphaera mundi'. First published in 1472, it was reprinted dozens of times in Europe throughout the C15. It discusses the earth in relation to the geocentric Ptolemaic universe, touching on subjects including its physical composition, geometrical realization, its (as it were) sphericity, the revolution of the heavens and the zodiac in relation to sunrise and sunset, the meaning of zenith and climate zones. Johannes Regiomontanus (Müller von Königsberg, 1436-76) studied at Leipzig and Vienna, devoting himself to commentaries on ancient texts on arithmetic and astronomy. He established the first astronomical observatory in Nuremberg. His work argues against the 'deliramenta' of Gherardus Cremonensis's Ptolemaic 'Theorica Planetarum', written in the C12 and the most important manual of astronomy used in Faculties of Arts. Structured as a dialogue between two scholars, it concerns calculations relating to very specific points of the Ptolemaic system, e.g., epicycles and longitude, with the help of geometrical diagrams. The last work'Theoricae novae planetarum'was written by Georgius Purbach (von Peuerbach, 1423-61), an Austrian astronomer and mathematician, acquainted with Regiomontanus. It is a clear introduction to the Ptolemaic universe which discusses the sun and moon, theories of the polar axis and astronomical connections between the moon and the motions of other planets. The early C16 annotator of 'Sphaera mundi' was probably one of the 'novicii adolescentes' (young students) to whom the works were addressed. He applied sundry learning techniques, which shed light on the teaching of astronomy: the typically medieval and early modern interlinear paraphrasis (the rewriting of a concept using synonyms, e.g., 'ascensu' for 'ortu'); marginal glosses (e.g., the astronomical concept of 'annus bisextilis', a clarification of the meaning of 'opposition' for the zodiac); and the clarification of sources (e.g., the specific book in which Euclid discusses the geometrical 'sphaera'). Antes del texto hay unos versos latinos de Pedro de Lerma Burgense, sigue la dedicatoria a Jacobo Ramírez de Guzmán y a Alfonso Ossorio, y un erudito discurso sobre las ciencias matemáticas. Sacrobosco fue un eminente autor del siglo XIII nacido en Inglaterra y conocido como John Holywood; fue el primero en calcular las discrepancias existentes entre el calendario Juliano y el calendario solar actual, proponiendo un remedio prácticamente idéntico al que puso en práctica el Papa Gregorio XIII en el siglo dieciséis. La obra de Sacrobosco toma numerosas ideas de Ptolomeo, pero a la vez muestra un gran conocimiento de las obras de los astrónomos arábigos medievales; incluye la descripción, naturaleza y forma de la tierra, la división de ella en sus zonas climáticas, y el posicionamiento de las estrellas. Ciruelo hizo sobre el texto de Sacrobosco numerosas consideraciones matemáticas, astronómicas y filosóficas. Pedro Ciruelo (1470-1548) nació y empezó sus estudios en Daroca, los terminó en Salamanca y pasó posteriormente a perfeccionarse a París, en cuya universidad fue acogido muy favorablemente por sus conocimientos matemáticos, que le reputaron merecida fama en todo Europa. Regresó Ciruelo a España en 1509, después de haber pasado diez años en París. Valuable folio edition of Sacrobosco's famous Spera with additions and commentaries by Pedro Ciruelo. Sacrobosco discussed the Earth and its place in the Universe. It was required reading by students in all Western European universities for the next four centuries. Very good copy.

Small quarto (7 3/4 x 5 7/8 inches; 197 x 150 mm). 48 leaves. Woodcuts and diagrams, seven of which are colored. With the full-page woodcut portraying… Urania, Ptolemy, and Astronomia on a throne, printed here for the first time. And a woodcut printer's device printed in red on colophon leaf. Additionally there are numerous engraved initials. This is the second book printed in color, the first being the first edition of this title. Full modern calf. Boards ruled in gilt. Spine stamped and lettered in gilt. Some minor scuffs to boards. Modern marbled endpapers. Previous owner's old ink faded marginalia, on title-page and throughout. Some minor occasional soiling and a few minor marginal wormholes. Overall a very good, crisp copy. Housed in a custom cloth clamshell. Written about 1220, De Sphaera is "a small work based on Ptolemy and his Arabic commentators.antedating the De sphaera of Grosseteste. It was quite generally adopted as the fundamental astronomy text, for often it was so clear that it needed little or no explanation. It was first used at the University of Paris.and from the middle of the thirteenth century it was taught in all the schools of Europe.
