Avec Desargues, l'architecte rencontre le géomètre et l'ingénieur, comme la théorie rencontre l'organisation et la pratique des métiers dont elle s'inspire aussi bien ; son oeuvre ne s'inscrit pas dans le monde spécialisé des académies, pas plus qu'elle ne relève de la vie universitaire. Par leur titre, la plupart des textes de Desargues aiguisent la curiosité, ce sont des brouillons projects, pour la coupe des pierres ou pour une atteinte aux evenemens des rencontres du Cône avec un Plan. Le présent ouvrage en facilite la lecture, quatre siècles après la naissance de l'auteur. Son renom fut à éclipses, oublié, retrouvé ou plutôt reconstruit au XlXè siècle. Au contraire de certains archéologues qui détruisent les aménagements postérieurs pour ne laisser subsister que des ruines ""authentiques"", la tâche présente est de décrire les Desargues successifs dans le temps, celui de Pascal, celui de Bosse ou celui de Chasles, comme autant de formes qui ont marqué notre pensée. Car un nouveau regard a été façonné, le regard projectif, et c'est une métaphysique de la géométrie par laquelle l'espace sert le plan.
