In den WarenkorbHardback. Zustand: Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. First Edition. Saki [pseudonym of H. H. Munro]. The Square Egg and Other Sketches, With Three Plays and Illustrations . With a Biography By His Sister. London: John Lane the Bodley Head Limited, [1924]. First edition. Octavo, pp. [1-8] [1-2] 3-318 [319-320: [publisher's ads]. Original dark gray decorative cloth, spine panel stamped in gold, front panel stamped in blind, top edge of text block stained dark blue, corrigendum slip tipped in before contents page. Illustrated with a photographic portrait of the author (in Army uniform) on frontis. A fine sharp copy in a very good dust jacket with a 10x27 mm chip at upper right corner of front jacket panel (not affecting any type) and some light general dustiness. Scarce in this condition. #3401. $200. A posthumously published collection, gathering eight stories and sketches, including the excellent supernatural tale, "The Infernal Parliament". The sketches are set at the front, where Saki served and was killed in action in 1916. Also included are two short macabre plays and a full-length play more in Saki's usual witty style. An impressionistic 117-page memoir of Hector by his sister Ethel M. Munro includes some of his letters and drawings. The wartime sketches read much like stories and are unusual for their avoidance of expected wartime sentiments. A useful resource for any student of Saki, who was arguably the most accomplished and prolific comic writer of the Edwardian period, easily shifting from acrobatic mischief to pointed satire. His ability to work sombre overtones into his mayhem is often missed by critics who only peg him as a humorist -- but, then, the best comedy frequently mixes the bitter with the sweet.
