Tipped in on front end-page: First Latin Speech Prize awarded to a second year student at the Jesuit College Louis-Le-Grand in Paris on June 5th, 1703 (a very early date to allow Louis XIV to attend). Roger de la Rochefoucald, recipient of this award, born July 27, 1787, was one the great-grandsons of the great moralist, from who he had only inherited the title of Prince de Marcillac when he died in Hungary as an officer (he had been abbot before) on June 18, 1717. Father Jacques Salian, SJ (1557-1640) is best known by the work opposite, the first edition, published in Paris, dates from 1624." The Lycee Louis-le-Grand is a prestigious secondary school located in Paris. Founded in 1563 by the Jesuits as the College de Cleremont it was renamed in King Louis XIV of France s honor after he extended his direct patronage to it in 1682. Many of its former pupils have become influential scientists, statesmen, diplomats, prelates, intellectuals and writers. Moliere, Victor Hugo and Charles Baudelaire, revolutionaries Robespierre, Camille Desmoulins, as well as seven former presidents of the French Republic.
