Basch ripercorre gli ultimi dieci mesi di vita dell'imperatore con ritmo incalzante, riportando le pagine del suo diario e facendoci rivivere in presa diretta, giorno dopo giorno, le fasi di avvicinamento alla fine. Il merito del dottor Basch è di averci restituito un ritratto senza sbavature, preciso, intenso e dipinto con profondo rispetto, ma anche affetto, verso un imperatore che forse non voleva esserlo, ma che non si è mai tirato indietro.
